Details: The native range of the species is from Italy eastward as far as Iran. But it most likely originated east of the Balkans and appears to have arrived in Greece around 1000 BC, where it was able to adapt.
According to local tradition, the Kolokotronis clan held meetings with the village elders in the shade of this plane tree, taking decisions about the upcoming national uprising. Close to the tree there is a small spring that supplied the village with water until as recently as the early 1970s.
