THE MOREA-MORIAS (GREEK: ΜΟΡΕΑΣ OR ΜΩΡΙΑΣ) WAS THE NAME OF THE PELOPONNESE PENINSULA IN SOUTHERN GREECE DURING THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD. THE NAME WAS USED FOR THE BYZANTINE PROVINCE KNOWN AS THE DESPOTATE OF THE MOREA, BY THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE FOR THE MOREA EYALET, AND BY THE REPUBLIC OF VENICE FOR THE SHORT-LIVED KINGDOM OF THE MORIA.

GREECE IS CELEBRATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEGINNING OF THE GREEK REVOLUTION AND MORIAS IS IN THE SPOTLIGHT, AS IT WAS BACK THEN.

ACTIVITIES - HISTORY

With the use of high technology and modern audiovisual media, paintings by Greek and foreign artists come to life digitally, combined with narration of the events depicted by their protagonists.

ACTIVITIES - ART

Artists engage with the urban environment of certain selected cities in the Peloponnese, creating contemporary murals on the theme of the Revolution and its Heroes.

ACTIVITIES - GASTRONOMY

The eating habits of the Revolutionary Fighters of 1821 gave way to a gastronomic journey into history, with Chef Lefteris Lazarou’s invaluable input. He has created a menu inspired by the Greek cuisine of that period, which is now served at restaurants across the Peloponnese.

We highlight 27 different trees in Morias, all a few centuries-old, that bore witness to the events of the Revolution that dictated the course of history, and have acquired special significance in the hearts and minds of Greeks.
