In terms of its botanical importance in Europe, the 183-acre juniper forest is considered to be invaluable. Unsurprisingly, this unique habitat has been included in the European ecological network ‘Natura 2000’.
In pre-revolutionary times, this area was a hideout of the klepht captain Zacharias Barbitsiotis and the site of clashes between Greeks and Turks during the Orlov revolt (1770). During the Revolution, the nearby Holy Monastery of Malevi was burned to the ground by the forces of Ibrahim Pasha, so it was very fortunate that the forest escaped this destruction.
