OLIVE TREE AT PETROCHORI

Species: Olea europaea

Subspecies: Olea europaea var. europaea

Age: Centuries-old

Details: The species originates from the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris) and is naturally distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin.

This olive tree at Petrochori was an ‘eyewitness’ to the rapid march of the Greek forces heading to nearby Palaiokastro to reinforce the castle garrison. During the brief siege of Palaiokastro, which ended with the heroic sally of the besieged Greeks and the capture of the castle by Ibrahim Pasha, the Egyptian-Ottoman forces had set up one of their camps at Petrochori.
