PLANE TREE AT KERASTARIS

Species: Platanus orientalis

Dimensions: trunk girth 8 m

Age: Centuries-old

Details: The native range of the species is from Italy eastward as far as Iran. But it most likely originated east of the Balkans and appears to have arrived in Greece around 1000 BC, where it was able to adapt.

During the Revolution, according to local tradition, freedom fighters found refuge in the hollows of this imposing plane tree. They also used it as a means of communication, exchanging secret messages by concealing them in tiny holes in the enormous trunk.
