Details: The native range of the species is from Italy eastward as far as Iran. But it most likely originated east of the Balkans and appears to have arrived in Greece around 1000 BC, where it was able to adapt.
According to tradition, as well as the accompanying informational sign, it was in the shadow of this historic plane tree that Metropolitan Germanos III of Old Patras gathered the freedom fighters who would soon figure prominently in the liberation of Kalavryta, in March 1821, administered an oath to them and blessed the flag of the Revolution.
