KAPODISTRIAS’ PALM TREE

Species: Phoenix dactylifera (date palm)

Age: Centuries-old

Protected Monument of Nature (Government Gazette 590/B/1977)

Details: More correctly, this is not a palm tree but a date palm. The species has been cultivated since ancient times, so its native range is not precisely known, although it was probably between Egypt and Mesopotamia. The species has been known in Greece since as early as Minoan times.

The wooden sign fixed to the dead trunk reads: “ACCORDING TO LEGEND, THIS PALM TREE WAS PLANTED BY THE FIRST GOVERNOR OF GREECE, I. KAPODISTRIAS, 1828-31”. The tree was badly damaged when a German aircraft bombed Nafplio in 1941, while a violent storm in December 2008 led it to the loss of its rich foliage.
