OAK TREE AT PERITHORI

Species: Quercus frainetto

Age: Centuries-old

Protected Monument of Nature (Government Gazette 121/D/1980)

Details: The Hungarian Oak or Italian Oak is one of the most widespread and important oak species in Greece.

The historic oak of Perithori stands in the courtyard of the old church of Saint George. Due to the strategic location of the village, on the main route to and from the Corinthian plain, during the Revolution this tree would have ‘seen’ large forces of Greeks and Ottomans passing close by on their way to crucial battles and sieges.
