OLIVE TREES AT MOLAOI

Species: Olea europaea

Subspecies: Olea europaea var. europaea

Age: Centuries-old

Details: The species originates from the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris) and is naturally distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin.

The centuries-old olive trees at Molaoi, which stand outside the settlement of Sykea, somehow survived the rampaging Egyptian-Ottoman army of Ibrahim Pasha in the summer of 1825, when large expanses of forest and many villages in the area were reduced to ashes.
