THE OLIVE TREE OF NAFPLIO

Details: The species originates from the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris) and is naturally distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin.

 

The so-called “Olive Tree of Nafplio” stands outside the Holy Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God and is associated with the patron saint of Nafplio, Anastasios Neomartyr.

According to tradition, Anastasios was forced by the Ottomans to convert to Islam, but he immediately repented. When the Turks learned of this, they tortured and executed him on 1 February 1655, at the place where this olive tree stands today.
