CENTURIES-OLD OLIVE TREES

Species: Olea europaea

Subspecies: Olea europaea var. europaea

Age: Centuries-old

Details: The species originates from the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris) and is naturally distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin.

The approximately 120 centuries-old olive trees near the old and new village of Vasilada constitute a natural ‘museum’ of outstanding beauty. Their historical importance lies in the fact that they are among the very few trees that survived the fires set in large areas of forest and woodland throughout the region by the Egyptian-Ottoman forces of Ibrahim Pasha.
