PLANE TREES AT CHORA

Species: Platanus orientalis

Age: Centuries-old

Details: The native range of the species is from Italy eastward as far as Iran. But it most likely originated east of the Balkans and appears to have arrived in Greece around 1000 BC.

About 20 impressive plane trees dominate the square next to Kefalovryso just outside the village of Chora where, at the time of the Revolution, the Greek forces had set up a camp and supply center for the freedom fighters besieging the Ottoman-held fortresses at Methoni and Koroni. The plane trees would be silent witnesses to the turbulent days of March-April 1825 when, in the camp at Chora, the revolutionaries prepared, with the meager resources available, for a series of ultimately unsuccessful engagements with the forces of Ibrahim Pasha.
