THE MOTHER OLIVE OF KALAMATA

  • Species: Olea europaea
  • Subspecies: Olea europaea var. europaea
  • Age: ≈ 850 – 2000 years
  • Protected Monument of Nature (Government Gazette 121/D/1980)
  • Details: The species originates from the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris) and is naturally distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin. This particular tree is considered to be the ‘mother’ of the celebrated Kalamata olive.

The fertile valley around Kalamata was almost entirely destroyed by fire on the orders of Ibrahim Pasha between 1825 and 1828. According to a local legend, this is the only olive tree in Kalamata that survived the devastation.
